Population Science is a new theme within the BRC, added in 2012. Our main objective is to link research programmes from a population dimension, looking at large cohorts of data and identifying priorities for clinical trials in certain disease areas. The initial focus will be on vascular diseases (including high blood pressure, heart failure and heart attack) and metabolic conditions (including type I and type II diabetes).
Our specific aims are
- discovery and validation of novel drugs, treatments and care by analysing and integrating large sets of data on genotype, immediate phenotype and disease
- identifying sub populations who are at highest absolute risk of disease and/or are most likely to benefit from a particular intervention based on information on biological, lifestyle and socio-demographic factors
- contribute to core population bioresources, facilities and analytical expertise to advance the work of the BRC
